“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.” – Aaron Rose

It can be said that I am a lover of the light. I so love the light. I live and shine by light’s glory. It could be the sun’s magnificent light or the light from the stars that provides me peace within. I will always want a bright well lite home with many windows to bring the light into my everyday world.

Light is part of everything we see and our world is surrounded by it.  We respond to it emotionally, it defines our world, it moves us, light is energy and it can lift our spirits capturing our imaginations. Light can be calming or energizing; it can create a sense of intimacy or a sense of space.

Light has so many different roles such as light and photosynthesis, light and architecture, light and photography, and of course light and painting. It seems whether you are an agriculturist, photographer, architect or a painter, light is the most important element that you can’t ignore in any creation.

Artists can show us that things are shiny. They can take flat canvas and turn it into a likeness of three dimensional space. They can use light to spotlight important aspects of a painting, and to set a mood.

Light lifts a painting; it emphasizes features through highlights and shadow and it brings depth. “The substance of painting is light.” – Andre Derain. With incorrect use or using too little, it can leave a composition dull and lifeless. Just as light can bring a painting to life, if poorly applied, it can also easily ruin the work. Simply placing a few highlights in the wrong place or painting a shadow in the wrong direction can unbalance a piece leaving the viewer confused of the work.

The skills of the master artists never fail to capture my admiration. “In nature, light creates the color. In the picture, color creates the light.” – Hans Hofmann. I’m captivated by the energy and life that light brings to a painting and how artists successfully reveal its beauty and ultimately affect what we see.

“Science is spectral analysis. Art is light synthesis.” – Karl Kraus

Even musicians write songs about light. One of my favorite ones is “Lover of the Light” performed by the band Mumford & Sons. The lyrics are listed below and here is a link to the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMJUbZrNnA8

These two paintings are titled “Lover of the Light” for the light within them lifts my spirits and reminds me that I too have light within me to share.

“The artist vocation is to send light into the human heart.” – Robert Schumann

Mumford & Sons Lyrics – “Lover Of The Light”

And in the middle of the night
I may watch you go
There’ll be no value in the strength
Of walls that I have grown
There’ll be no comfort in the shade
Of the shadows thrown
But I’d be yours if you’d be mine

Stretch out my life
And pick the seams out
Take what you like
But close my ears and eyes
Watch me stumble over and over

I had done wrong
You build your tower
But call me home
And I will build a throne
And wash my eyes out never again

But love the one you hold
And I’ll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights

With skin too tight
And eyes like marbles
You spin me high
So watch me as I glide
Before I tumble homeward, homeward

I know I tried
I was not stable
And flawed by pride
I miss my sanguine eyes
So hold my hands up – breathe in and breathe out

So love the one you hold
And I’ll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights

And in the middle of the night
I may watch you go
There’ll be no value in the strength
Of walls that I have grown
There’ll be no comfort in the shade
Of the shadows thrown
You may not trust the promises
Of the change I’ll show
But I’d be yours if you’d be mine

So love the one you hold
And I’ll be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights

So love the one you hold
And I will be your goal
To have and to hold
A lover of the lights
