“Dance is bigger than the physical body. Think bigger than that. When you extend your arm, it doesn’t stop at the end of your fingers, because you’re dancing bigger than that: you’re dancing spirit. “- Judith Ann Jamison, Dancer and Choreographer.

Dance is an art form that expresses ideas, emotions, spirituality and stories through movement of graceful, rhythmic and coordinated body of steps, turns, shakes and other movements.

Abstract artis an art form that uses a visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world.

Dance and art, especially abstract art, have so many similarities. Dance is a form of artistic expression just like the artist’s abstracts. They both are deeply ingrained in many diverse cultures. Dance and art, both are a form of social interaction through nonverbal communication often used to express ideas or tell a story.

Dancers have such great passion, just as artists who paint. They are of common spirit. Abstract art and dance seem to just fit.  Can’t you see the dancer extending her arm out to a striking pose and yet that same pose can be displayed by the abstract artist in an expressive brush stroke? Abstract art is concerned with embodying movement and expression on a two-dimensional canvas while the dancer provides a tantalizing kaleidoscope of shapes coalescing into dramatic movements.  The human body is the dancer’s basic instrument while the artist’s hands are his instrument.

“Dancing is an art. The floor is my canvas and I am the brush. And whatever I create comes from the heart.”

As an abstract artist I can relate to this dancer’s quote, for I too create from the heart. Both art and dance have a way of touching our inner spirit with unlimited emotional representations. This painting is titled “Dancing Spirit” for the freedom and spirit of dance which can also be represented in abstract art.

“To be creative means to be in love with life. You can be creative only if you love life enough that you want to enhance its beauty, you want to bring a little more music to it, a little more poetry to it, a little more dance to it” ~ Osho  (and may I add a little more art)
