We all can enjoy the Caresses of Sunshine. For, it is there for each one of us.
“The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world’s joy,” – Henry Ward Beecher
Even the artist craves to create glorious sunshine for all to experience whether it is through music or artwork. For instance, John Denver’s song “Sunshine on My Shoulders” does just that. Additionally, his song is soft soothing and through his melody and voice you can feel the caresses from the sun.
The lyrics of the song begin with:
“Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high”
As he continues with playing his guitar and singing, you can’t help but feel the peace and serenity the sun can offer us. Here are the next lines:
“If I had a day that I could give you
I’d give to you the day just like today
If I had a song that I could sing for you
I’d sing a song to make you feel this way”
In fact, John Denver is known for his heartwarming, spiritual songs that dealt with finding pleasure in the simple things. And I think this song seems to resonate just that.
From Songfacts:
“Denver wrote this song on an early spring day in Minnesota when the rain was gently falling. He found himself looking forward to spending more time outdoors and enjoying the sunshine. He said of the song, “On one level it was about the virtues of love. On another, more deeply felt level, it reached for something the whole world could embrace.””
Truly, the sun is such a warm and constant presence in life that it has become much more than just a ball of fire in the sky for us. It is a symbol for friendship, for happiness, for hope, and for the end of the storms in our lives.
“The sun lay like a friendly arm across her shoulder.” – Margorie Kinnan Rawlings
“Far away there in the sunshine are my brightest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them and try to follow where they lead.” – Louisa May Alcot
“O, Sunshine! The most precious gold the be found on earth.”
Indeed, sunshine makes me happy. Few things compare to the warmth of a bright, sunny morning—each one brings a promise of new opportunities. Some days things may go so well that you feel like the entire world is on your side, and even the sun itself is cheering for you. But we know, that is not always the case. There are low moments when it seems as if no rays will ever beam down, and on those days, you can create your own positive glow. This oil painting titled “Caresses of Sunshine” is my tribute to the powerful warmth and happiness the sunshine offers us.
