Harmony of Colors

It is said that color harmony is defined as the combining of colors in order to produce a pleasing effect. This oil painting with its many textures and layers created by palette knives has a blend of colors. From the cool shades to the warm shades to the light shades as well as the darker shades, it seems the unusual mixture of colors work in harmony with one another.

When using colors to recreate a general harmony of tones in nature, one loses it by painfully exact imitation. One keeps it by recreating in an equivalent color range, and that may not be exactly, or far from exactly, like the model. -Vincent Van Gogh

You might even agree that the use of colors in this particular painting has an esthetically pleasant color palette. For the color combinations create contrasts and consonances all at once.

Melody and harmony are like lines and colors in pictures. A simple linear picture may be completely beautiful; the introduction of color may make it vague and insignificant. Yet color may, by combination with lines, create great pictures, so long as it does not smother and destroy their value. – Author: Rabindranath Tagore
