“The Summer Wind came blowin’ in from across the sea
It lingered there, to touch your hair and walk with me
All summer long we sang a song and then we strolled that golden sand
Two sweethearts and the summer wind
Like painted kites, those days and nights they went flyin’ by
The world was new beneath a blue umbrella sky
Then softer than a piper man, one day it called to you
I lost you, I lost you to the summer wind
The autumn wind, and the winter winds they have come and gone
And still the days, those lonely days, they go on and on
And guess who sighs his lullabies through nights that never end?
My fickle friend, the summer wind
The summer wind, warm summer wind
Mmm … the summer wind”
Did you perhaps recognize the lyrics above from the song with the same title? The song was made popular by Frank Sinatra. Oh, how I love Frank’s voice and definitely love his version of the song. In fact, my husband and I both listen to this song often.
However, “Summer Wind” did not originate in America nor with Frank Sinatra. In fact, the original title was “Der Sommerwind” and the music for it was composed by German, Heinz Meier. The original lyrics were also in German, written by Hans Bradtke. American Johnny Mercer heard the song in its German version and in 1965 wrote an English version. The first American recording of the song was by Wayne Newton, also in 1965. Indeed, it is the 1966 version by Sinatra that has become the classic.
Summer Wind – Frank Sinatra
Frank Sinatra’s recording peaked at number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number one on the Easy Listening chart. Even though other singers have covered the song like Michael Bublé, Lovett, Shirley Bassey, Barry Manilow and James Dean Bradfield; the song seems to fit perfectly with Frank’s style. For his delivery transports you to the summer place. Where summer love was once felt, but long gone. Your memories of the time wistfully and longingly come rushing back as Frank sings.
Although this song is classic Sinatra in style and content, he didn’t start performing it regularly at his concerts until some twenty years after its recording. But by 1986, “Summer Wind” had become a part of Sinatra’s performances. Read more about Frank and the history of this song at Pop History.
This large acrylic painting is all about energic movement. It is like the wind has capture the colors and exuberantly placed them on the canvas to come bursting forward. Oh, the powerful summer breeze has blown through the canvas to disperse the paints into a frenzy of life. For the bright vibrant colors have a presence that can’t be ignored. A flamboyant and playful attitude like enjoying summertime fun.
