Hopping with Happiness – A Red-Eyed Tree Frog Acrylic Painting

Hopping with Happiness was a fun acrylic painting to create. Those adorable Red-Eyed Tree Frogs just seem to make you smile. Agalychnis callidryas, known as the red-eyed tree frog, captivates you with its bright red eyes, colorful sides, and an extremely expressive face.

This wonderful amphibian emerged roughly 10 million years ago. Additionally, it is known for its mastery of disguises. But if you want to see this charming creature, you will need to search for him at night.

For during the day, the red-eyed tree frog hides its colors and sleeps stuck under leaves, where it blends into the foliage perfectly. Additionally, the frog sometimes has tiny yellow spots that resemble leaf blemishes. These frogs spend a lot of time hiding in the trees. You will have to visit tropical lowlands in southern Mexico, Central America and northern South America to see them in the wild.

But at night, when they’re less at risk of becoming a meal, the frogs are much more active; they spend the time hunting for insects. Nocturnal carnivores, they hide in the rain forest canopy and ambush crickets, flies, and moths with their long, sticky tongues.

Despite its seemingly daunting coloration, the Redeyed Tree Frog is not poisonous; rather, it relies on those bright colors and especially its big red eyes to startle potential predators, a trait called startle coloration. When seated on a leaf, the red-eyed tree frog tucks its legs in close to its body and closes its eyes to hide—but when they sense a predator, they open their eyes and jump away, exposing a whole slew of dazzling colors. This gives the frog an opportunity to escape and land elsewhere to become a big green blob on a leaf that is usually not detectable.

So, this is my fun happy painting of 3 cute, adorable Red-Eyed Tree Frogs that I titled “Hopping with Happiness”. If you look for these frogs, note they are only 1.5 to 2 inches long and survive about 5 years in the wild.

Lastly, here is a little advice from a frog.

  • A frog decided to reach the top of a tree. All frogs shouted, “It’s impossible, It’s impossible”. Still the frog reaches the top. How? Because he was deaf. And he thought everyone was encouraging him to reach the top. “Be Deaf to Negative Thoughts. If you aim is to reach you goal”.
  • “Why are frogs so happy? They eat whatever bugs them”
