Dark & Stormy – SOLD – Prints Available
“It was a dark and stormy night” is an often-mocked and parodied phrasewritten by Englishnovelist Edward Bulwer-Lyttonin the opening sentenceof his 1830 novel Paul Clifford. The phrase is considered to represent “the archetypal example of a florid, melodramatic style of fiction writing”,also known as purple prose.
The phrase “It was a dark and stormy night” has been used in literature, music, movies, and board games.
Even the famous Peanuts comic strip character Snoopy, in his imagined persona as the World Famous Author, always begins his novels with the phrase “It was a dark and stormy night.” Cartoonist Charles Schulzmade Snoopy use this phrase because “it was a cliché, and had been one for a very long time”. A book by Schulz, titled It Was a Dark and Stormy Night, Snoopyand credited to Snoopy as author, was published by Holt, Rinehart, and Winstonin 1971.
This painting with its dark browns, blacks, and gray colors is enhanced and offset by the interwoven white and the bold and intense application of color. The painting seems to have a mysterious and luminous feel that I find alluring.
So, your day or night might be dark and stormy, but enjoyable at the same time such as a quiet evening with you and your thoughts listening to the rain falling.
By the way, there is also a drink called Dark and Stormy that is made with dark rum, ginger beer and a slice of lime. It tastes pretty darn good. Have you tried it?
