Overtures of Red
Overtures of Red
Before the first brush touched the 48-by-48 gallery wrap canvas, there was only silence. Then came the overture—a bold sweep of crimson breaking across fields of blue, like the opening note of a symphony. Layers of acrylic flowed from large brushes, where vibrant reds danced over cool blues, while whispers of purple and fuchsia emerged like hidden harmonies. It was not a battle of colors, but a conversation.

As the painting evolved, the colors seemed to echo an old truth: every light casts a contrasting shadow. The reds surged forward, while the blues answered with calm resolve, creating a visual rhythm that pulled the viewer deeper into the composition. Within, violet and fuchsia softened the divide, reminding that beauty often lives where opposites meet. Looking closely, one might imagine distant landscapes, rising flames, crashing tides, or other emotions.

There is a saying often attributed to Henri Matisse: “There are no rules. That’s how art is born, how breakthroughs happen.” In Overtures of Red, that freedom is unmistakable. Red has long been the color of passion, courage, energy, and love, but it also carries the weight of sacrifice and resilience. It is the first color the eye notices and often the last one forgotten. Here, red does not overpower blue—it embraces it, balancing strength with grace.
Overtures of Red is more than an abstract painting; it is an invitation to feel before trying to understand. Created with expressive, sweeping brushwork and color, it celebrates the moments when emotion speaks louder than explanation.
Dream. Believe. Create. Succeed.
Dare to Feel,
Red (Linda Harrison)
