Rhythms of Color can express a particular mood, feeling, or specific beat. Then combine this with the rhythms of music and you are soon immersed into a state of feeling good.

Rhythm is music’s pattern in time. Whatever other elements a given piece of music may have (e.g., patterns in pitch or timbre), rhythm is the one indispensable element of all music. For Rhythm can exist without melody, as in the drumbeats of so-called primitive music, but melody cannot exist without rhythm. Simply put, rhythm is that music component that makes us move, or even just tap our foot, when we listen to a song.

Then there is the rhythm of art. Rhythm in art refers to the arrangement of shapes in a way which creates an underlying beat. It is similar to the rhythm of music, but instead of notes and sounds, we use colors and shapes. While gazing upon the artwork, you feel its rhythm, its heartbeat.

But if you stop and think about it, rhythm exists in every aspect of our life.

“To live is to be musical, starting with the blood dancing in your veins. Everything living has a rhythm. Do you feel your music?” ― Michael Jackson

A pattern has rhythm, but not all rhythm is patterned. For example, the colors of a piece can convey rhythm, by making your eyes travel from one component to another. Even lines can produce a rhythm by implying movement.

Rhythms of Color Come to Life

So, as the artist feels the emotions of the music and the pulsating rhythm, she is ready to release the energy and expressions deep within her. Reaching for my paint and palette knives, I am set free by the huge canvas hanging before me.

Now, the rhythm of the artist begins. Dancing palette knives. Music flowing through my veins as the internal subconscious rhythm speaks to me. Colors intertwining with each other, some bold, some subtle. Even some eclipsed behind others, but all working together to create the rhythm of the painting.

It is a nonverbal voice, but you can still feel the vibration, hear the overall language.

“Our biological rhythms are the symphony of the cosmos, music embedded deep within us to which we dance, even when we can’t name the tune.” ― Deepak Chopra

As each painting has its own rhythm that can only be given to it by its creator, this painting titled “Rhythms of Color” says I am big with lots of energy and vibrant language. The colors are there to provide a rich and colorful experience as you travel through the piece.

Just as rhythm brings songs to life, the rhythm of color and shapes bring a canvas to life.

“When we find the natural rhythm and strike a perfect chord, we can sing our “own” song that will tune the signature of our life.” ― Erik Pevernagie
