“When the night returns just like a friend“ is the first line to Neil Diamond’s song “If You Know What I Mean“. In fact, this song is a track from Diamond’s 1976 album, Beautiful Noise. Indeed, I have listened to this song many times, for it never grows old for me. But then, I can say this about most of Neil Diamond’s songs and albums he has written and performed throughout the years.
Moreover, “If You Know What I Mean” was Diamond’s third number one on the Easy Listening chart, where it spent two weeks. It even went to number one for two nonconsecutive weeks and peaked at number eleven on the Billboard Hot 100.
To say nothing of how brilliant an artist Neil Diamond is. Actually, he is one of a kind superstar that sings from his heart with genuine feeling.
I have provided the lyrics to “If you know what I mean” below. As good as the lyrics are, hearing Neil sing it is just the best. So, here is a link to him singing the song back in 1976: 1976 Neil Diamond Performance.
Alternatively, the song might be a little melancholy, but it depicts the reality of life. And my acrylic painting titled “The Night Returns Just Like A Friend” means for me to embrace all aspects of myself, the miserable ones, the cheerful ones, the creative ones for they are all a part of who I am.

Neil Diamond – If You Know What I Mean Lyrics
When the night returns just like a friend When the evening comes to set me free When the quiet hours that wait beyond the day Make peaceful sounds in meTook a drag from my last cigarette Took a drink from a glass of old wine Closed my eyes and I could make it real And feel it one more timeCan you hear it, babe Can you hear it, babe From another time From another place Do you remember it, babe |
And the radio played like a carnival tune As we lay in our bed in the other room When we gave it away for the sake of a dream In a penny arcade, if you know what I mean If you know what I mean, babyAnd heres to the song we used to sing And heres to the times we used to know Its hard to hold them in our arms again But hard to let them goDo you hear it, babe Do you hear it, babe It was another time It was another place Do you remember it, babeIt was another time It was another place Do you remember it, babe |
And the radio played like a carnival tune As we lay in our bed in the other room When we gave it away for the sake of a dream In a penny arcade, if you know what I mean If you know what I meanIf you know what I mean If you know what I mean If you know what I mean If you know what I mean, baby If you know what I mean |
