The Phantom Lives

“Floating, falling, sweet intoxication. Touch me, trust me, savor each sensation. Let the dream begin, let your darker side give in to the power of the music of the night.”
Charles Hart, The Phantom of the Opera: Piano/Vocal

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘The Phantom of the Opera’, a Broadway musical based upon a novel by the French writer Gaston Leroux, is a timeless creation. One that will live on for many, many years. Even, Andrew Lloyd Webber said “Nothing will ever be as big as ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ for me”.

In another of Webber’s quotes about the musical, he said “I’ve often thought that we left the original ‘Phantom’ with a little bit of a cliff hanger, and I thought, ‘Well, why not to do a sequel to it’ at one point.”  For,I have always felt the Phantom escaped the fiery ending and continued to live. But whether he did or did not, his spirit and the music of the night lives on for all of us to enjoy.

The Phantom Lives

“Erik is not truly dead. He lives on within the souls of those who choose to listen to the music of the night.” Gaston Leroux, The Phantom of the Opera

After creating these two paintings and stepping back to view them, my thoughts were filled with “The Phantom of the Opera’, particularly how the Phantom’s essence along with the phenomenal music continues to touch me. For I do love listening to the soundtrack, yes, I listen to it quite often.

What do you think of these two paintings? Do you think the Phantom lives?

“Art has a double face, of expression and illusion, just like science has a double face: the reality of error and the phantom of truth.” – Publilius Syrus
