If I said I love listening to the Blues while I paint, that would be an understatement. For instance, you can often find me belting out the lyrics while I create my abstracts. I think this form of music has such soul and depth; music that just seems to touch me. It has a way of connecting with the entire me – from my toes to my fingers and my conscious and subconscious brain.
The blues has deep roots in American history, particularly African American history. Furthermore, it originated on Southern plantations in the 19th Century. Its inventors were slaves, ex-slaves and the descendants of slaves—African American sharecroppers who sang as they toiled in the cotton and vegetable fields.
Blues Origin
It’s generally accepted that the music evolved from African spirituals, African chants, work songs, field hollers, rural fife and drum music, revivalist hymns, and country dance music. These songs came from the area near the mouth of the Mississippi River. This form of music grew up in the Mississippi Delta just upriver from New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz. The first blues songs were called Delta blue and usually played with a saxophone in jazzy style. It was derived the “Blue Devils”, which means depression and misery.
So, whether I am listening to the Memphis, the Delta or the king of blues, this genre of music is alright with me. For you will find, many of my contemporary abstract art come to life while listening to the many blues artist and musicians.
